Profile of Polish Tourists Abroad 1994 - 1999

Summary 1999

  • The most frequently visited country is Germany (above one third of departures). To a certain degree it is due to geographical position of Germany on the way to other Western countries. Similarly - many visits to Czech Republic is connected with travelling southwards. Other popular destinations are: France (8% of trips), Austria (6%), Italy, Sweden, The Netherlands (5% each). Merely 4% trips were made to outside of Europe.

  • Polish tourist have stayed abroad in 1999 6.9 nights in average (a little less than in preceding years). Southern Europe had the longest visits (10.2 nights), and Russia, Belorus, Ukraine, Lithuania - the shortest (3.5 nights in average).

  • Tourist&leisure is a primary purpose of visiting Southern Europe (86%) as well as Western Europe (56%). Germany and Eastern neighbours (Russia, Belorus, Ukraine, Lithuania) are visited either for VFR or for business. Also shopping-oriented trips directed to these countries.

  • One-fourth has purchased services of tourist agencies. The use of such services is much more considerable when travelling to South European destinations.

  • 63% of outbound tourists live in big cities. That share increase to 75% among visitors to Western Europe and even to 84% when South of Europe are visited.

  • The average expenditures abroad amounted to 180 USD per person. This is fewer than in previous year

The tables below describe tourists who visited countries of western or southern Europe, but who might have also visited also other countries during the same travel.

Data for the years 1998 and 1999 are presented in segmentation on:

  • Southern Europe: Spain, Greece, Italy and Turkey;
  • Western Europe and Nordic countries: Austria, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland,
    UK, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.

Data for the previous years are presented jointly as "Europe".
